Everyone knows we should focus while behind the wheel. But with technology infiltrating our lives it's hard not to get distracted at any time of the day, let alone in our cars. Luckily, distracted driving has declined over the last few years due to laws regulating phone use while driving. Even though these laws have been in place for over 5 years distracted driving is still the cause of many car accidents.
So our Governor Jerry Brown helped pass the new Assembly Bill 1785 prohibits ALL hand-held use of phones, tablets, or any other electronic devices while driving(excluding systems embedded in the vehicle). This law is intended to protect everyone on the road and help them keep their focus on their surroundings. It's now against the law to do the following:
- Hold your phone and talk (even if your phone is on speakerphone)
- Check or post on your social media (no more snap chat!)
- Read, write or send text messages
- Shoot videos or photos (no more car selfies or videos of you singing, sorry!)
Keep all technology out of your hands while on the road. This will require drivers to utilize a mount for their smartphones or GPS systems and place them on the lower left corner of their windshields or on their dashboard. Drivers are also encouraged to use their bluetooth or headphones for phone calls made on the road.
